Since my last few cars have been 4 cylinders and my current one is a 5, I think my only option is that all off my future cars must have the fewest marginal number of cylinders more than the previous one.
Next car- BMW with a straight six obviously, mayyyybe a Merc with a V6. But probably a BMW. Because now that I’m a Volvo driver, I can’t compromise my standards and drive a barbaric and uncouth V6 powered motor carriage.
Also worth noting a KIA Stinger could probably fill this role as well. Since hopefully I won’t be replacing the S40 anytime soon and by then Stingers will be cheap because they’ll depreciate like a S class out of warranty since nobody wants a nice KIA apparently.
Car after that- Gonna have to be a V8. Most likely would be American. Camaro or Mustang.
Car after that- V10. So probably like an Audi R8 or a Lambo Hurricane or whatever, assuming the engines in those are fairly reliable.
For the V12.... Really the only options here are Aston Martin and of course a 7 series or S-class.

But have you had a 3 cylinder. Then I have the car for you. You can probably guess what it is based on my love for Mini

Better also be planning of a 3 cylinder Fiesta for while your wallet is recovering from a german V12 :)

I think 5 is more better than 4 than 6 is over 5, but a BMW straight six is all you’ll ever need ;)

What happens when you get to 100 cylinders and have nothing left with more?

Do you then consider your life complete and settle with that until some other monstrosity is created?

I’ve had cars that were 4 6 and 8 and a 2 cylinder motorcycle. The most fun were the 4s and the 6. That is WRX, S3, and Skyline. The 8 was a Mustang GT.
I would love to have a 5 in a RS3 lol.
The RB20 in the Skyline is probab the smoothest engine in a car i’ve ever driven.

If you really want to do this right you should follow your straight six with a V8 with no spark in one of the cylinders, and then not fix it during your ownership, before moving on to a fully functional V8.

Funny so far I’ve been going the other way. I had a 5.4 V8 then a 4.6 V8 and now a 1.8 I-4. I want to get it to start going the other way though. The current plan is either a used Focus ST or a 2013-2015 Honda Accord Sport with a manual. So either a 2.0 I-4 turbo or a 2.5 naturally aspirated I-4. I’ve never had a manual and think that’s what I want for my next one but that also depends on the commute.

Straight 6? You peon. You need a Porsche flat 6.

True, I almost forgot the early Caymans had flat sixes! Something like that might be doable in my life time.

Since the Volvo was turbod I was wondering if a NA 6 would even be an improvement, but I guess if it’s RWD that’d make up for any lack of torque or power (if there is any)

BMW’s turbo sixes are no joke, but even an N52B30 should be nicer than most Volvo I-5s.

Yeah, I may end up with one sometime next decade. You could also get a 986 Boxster for next to nothing. They’re slow and not exactly the most attractive thing Porsche has put out, but flat 6 is flat 6.

I also want a V8 again.
Consider a Jeep 4.0 I6, XJ Cherokees are likely the cheapest.
Ford made a V10 truck as did Dodge.

Then to retire in elegance you need a V-16. I suggest a Marmon to separate yourself from plebes in Cadillacs.

In one year I sold a 4cyl. boat and a 4cyl car and bought a V8 boat and V8 truck. Right now we have three straight sixes and two V8s if you count the boat (V8). No turbos. :(
